I love this program. I print the student handouts and keep them in a small binder for each kid. I try to do at least one page a day (my classes also have other things to complete). The topics go along with what the standards are and what the teachers are teaching. There are video links you can set up for kids who are absent. I also love the extra resources like mazes and color and solve assignments for extra practice for the students. The website is well thought out and easy to view.

Comment on MTM All Access by Joshua Little https://www.maneuveringthemiddle.com/product/all-access/#comment-332569 Thu, 25 Jan 2024 00:38:12 +0000 https://www.maneuveringthemiddle.com/?post_type=product&p=26684#comment-332569 I went from teaching one level to teaching 6th through Algebra this school year. I thought I had the one-level pretty dialed in. I would not have been able to survive the first semester without MtM. The materials are so easy to use and complete with teacher materials and student materials. I do not need to adjust the materials, it really is ready to go. Everything has answer keys, which is a huge time saver. I use the slides daily and am able to post to our LMS. Students follow along with their packets that are aligned with the slides. Oh, and the activities, there are so many activities for each unit both printable and electronic, which provides variety for the students (and me). The variety allows for groups or stations work, too. The material builds nicely and is all well thought out. The rigor is high and I have modified for my lower students from time to time. I totally appreciate the level and quality of the work.
Just yesterday, I had a data meeting to go over our 2nd quarter scores and as this is my first year at this school, I knew my scores but not exactly sure how they compared (of course we are always compared). They broke down each standard by school and district. WOW! My students were above the district average in every strand for every grade. There were several area where my students were the highest. My Algebra students (11) were ranked the highest at 100% proficient on all standards covered on the benchmarks for the district (MS & HS). The growth is more than I could have ever expected.
For transparency, I have under 100 students in 6-Algebra with a 4-day school week, the district has over 13,000 students k-12 (5-day school week). I have a wide range of abilities, some students count on their fingers and test at 3-4th grade level to Algebra.
I am one of those teachers that never understood why a teacher “paid” for materials. The mentality limited my classroom success. Planning 4 levels daily was just not something that would come easy for me. The schools do not provide adequate materials. The time I have saved and my mental stability has been worth it. Thank you for providing amazing materials!

I can imagine it would be demotivating for the class with the lower level learners to never ‘beat’ the other classes. I have also tried doing exit tickets and have never managed to keep it going so I do want to find something more manageable though.

Grading in front of them works for some quick checks but takes longer on others. We have so many standards and many standards get assessed multiple times. This would cause some overlap on the board. We practice standards based grading so this would be a great visual motivator to show students that just because they haven’t mastered the standard YET, if they keep working they can still achieve that goal by the time of the summative assessment. Thank you so much!

Hardly ever needed to supplement anything unless it was a state specific thing not included or extra from CCSS. I post a daily slide in their Google Classroom so they have access to everything we do and teaching videos. It helps with those who are absent or just need to watch again to reinforce or as they do their assignment. Kids that claim they lose assignments and can’t do their work, no worries a link is posted in your Google Classroom, you can print one or work them on notebook paper. Some lessons that I felt were straight forward were easy to “flip” the classroom and those lessons where students could self pace could do that with the videos, freeing me up to work more closely with struggling students. I could go one with more, Noelle and her team are fabulous. THIS IS MONEY WELL SPENT!!❤️

The class that I usually have issues with won the prize! I got feedback from one of my regular subs and she appreciated the emergency procedures pages because she said that is one area where subs are usually not prepared.

Don’t assume that they understand what you want, teach those procedures explicitly until they become 2nd nature. And, the students will only get away with what you let them get away with.

I like small groups for discussions and short research/reflection activities… One trick I use is I have a box with some little tokens inside. I have tokens of 8 different shapes (circle, oval, square, rectangle, triangle, diamond, rectangle, octagon, star) I have also a mix of 8 different colors, and I also have a number on them from 1- 8… Then I can have students pick randomly from the box… but at the last minute I can say “all the shapes pair up” or “all the same number” or “pair by color”. I typically don’t overthink it, but sometimes I can notice that a student I would like paired with another has the same color or shape, or number, and I can on the fly pick how I want them paired, but from the student perspective, it still feels random. Also, it keeps everyone on their toes and they can figure out how I’m going to group them.

I used to spend hours upon hours searching on the internet for practice, activities, and notes. Not anymore! The other thing that helps me is to print out the handouts I want to use for lessons before the unit. I spread them out in stacks for packets to copy by the week. I can always supplement with an extra activity or practice, but the bulk of my planning work is done. It’s saved me so much time to have one main resource to follow!

Hi, Hweijuan! $335 is the price for a bundle for a single grade level. We have a payment plan to aid with the cost. We love Near Pod – many teachers use it with MTM resources. Go Formative is another favorite!

I help my 8th grader with his math homework and am looking for some reference sheets showing when to change the +/- sign, how to know when we keep-change while solving an equation, etc.
We had some great reference sheets last year but due to COVID we didn’t get our binder at the end of the school year, so all these great notes went in the trash:(
If you have something available, please let me know.

I made sure there was enough so that everyone in the class could get a pencil if needed. As they enter the room, the students can take one if they need one, but all of the holders need to have a pencil in them before the class is excused for the next period.

I also got rid of my pencil sharpener for students (I sharpen all pencils during my prep period or at the end of the day). The routine is to raise their dull pencil in the air to indicate that they need a sharp pencil, which I take from the pencil wall and replace it with their dull pencil (which usually isn’t that dull). Not having a pencil sharpener has saved me from having to deal with the constant interruptions of students getting out of their seats and then waiting for the noise of the sharpener to stop.

Since I started this routine I no longer find broken pencils on the floor and all of the money I would spend on replacing pencils I get to spend on fun activities to use in the classroom to engage my students and help them find a love for math.

I keep cough drops for myself but wouldn’t share with a students. (They’re considered a medication in our district.) I keep a giant bag of hard peppermint for students—can relieve a mild headache, a sore throat, sinus congestion, and even wake up a sleepy kid.

Nice but my teachers let us do test corrections if we get a bad grade on the test if we get a 40 out of one hundred she subtracts 40 by 100 which is 60 and 60 divided by 2 which is 30 and 30 plus your original grade just by correcting your wring answers on the test and explaining why, that is the answer and writing a 5 to 8 sentence why test correction are important.

In fact, many of my students don’t have access to any kind of computer at home. Some of those students have smartphones, but with limited data plans (as you can imagine, this is making the “extra” week of Spring break more challenging to reach all of my students). For this reason I still use paper in my classroom for take-home assignments so as to not exclude at-risk students. I do like Pear Deck as a supplemental resource, and use Google Classroom extensively (though, to provide information, not to help with grading).

And on a side note, your expressions and equations unit was so great that a few teachers bought your inequalities (which I also have and will begin Monday). The caliber of your questions is just so good. Sure, parents hate me….”why are there so many word problems?” (Because LIFE is a word problem!) Field trips require ample planning and effort, so if a teacher is planning everything alone, it may be in their best interest to bring in some assistance. Enlisting the services of a student’s parent, for example, will help to take some of the burden off.

Hi, Hayley! Thanks for your comment. To answer your question, my advice would be to put students who are typically in need of small group assistance in the same row or quadrant in your classroom. When it is time for small group, you just ask them all to pull their desks together. When I had a desk set up, I put these students in the front near my big white board, so I could just have them pull up closer to the white board where we would work problems together. Sometimes, you might need to pull a student or two who doesn’t sit close; I would just ask students to quickly swap seats. Happy Teaching! -Tyne

Hi, Ally! Congrats on your pregnancy! My advice would be to first talk with HR about the amount of time you can take off and still have a job when you come back. I don’t think any mom would tell you that 12 weeks is enough time. It certainly does not feel like it. Truthfully, I cried the first few days leading up to going back and for about a week after I returned to the classroom. The heartbreak subsides and becomes easier as your baby grows and gets to interact with other babies. My daughter now prefers going to ‘school’ over staying home with mommy. Wishing you a great pregnancy, a healthy delivery, and a happy maternity leave. -Tyne

That will (hopefully) save me soo much time.

I also use student graders by having them check each other’s bell work every Friday. I have them swap and check, then turn them in the bin and I have the final say over the grade. This prevents them trying to “help” their friends by boosting their grades.

Question, though. I’ve read other posts of yours and you use a lot of small groups for math. I teach social studies, but I like to do small groups, too. I have 28 students in my largest class and exactly that number of desks. I’m having trouble finding room in the classroom for my small groups. I don’t really have space for an extra table, so I’m in need of some advice

When I was student teaching, we had a tradition where someone would leave one of those big easel type papers near the copy machine and it would say something like “write your funniest joke” or “draw something that makes you happy” or “what’s one thing you’re thankful for”. It would be harder to do at a school without a central copy machine, but maybe in another area where most staff congregate.

This is my first time teaching Math intervention. I started last week and the school does not have any curriculum to work with. My mind is all over the places since I have 6th-8th grade Tier 2 and 3. We meet every other day.The tier 2 classes are 45 minutes and tier 3 90 minutes. I also don’t have a classroom since I am in a cart. How can you help me with structure, content and centers? I need ideas.

Hi, Amber – That sounds really tough! One idea is to communicate that work should be done and practiced in order to best understand future concepts. Waiting until the end of the grading period will only get you behind – both in workload AND math understanding. Best of luck!

I am implementing the crate for make-up work. How do you guys handle late work if your school requires you to take it all the way up to the end of a grading period? I’ve struggled with this idea for years. How do we encourage the responsibility of doing work on time if we have to accept it no matter what? Thoughts?

It is comforting to know that I am not alone in this overly nit-picky process. I have been working on my loan forgiveness application for just over a year. Another item that has impacted mine:
The name of the school on the application did not match the name on the federal Title 1 list. The human resources person signed it “___ Middle School” when it should have said “___ Intermediate School. Another school on my application had 2 initials before the last name. Ex: J.A. Doe Middle School. Well the initials are not in the Title 1 directory. Please check the exact name from the low-income school list.

When grading papers I have them place their pencils on the floor. I try to have only answers on the keys I show students. That way if they try to turn in a paper without work I give it back. When they say it’s at home or accidentally thrown away I say, “Oh bummer. You know the rule. Well, at least it’ll be fast (or easy) this time since you’ve already done it once.” 🙂

You mentioned that before teachers jump right into integer operations, they should provide real-world examples of integers. I absolutely agree! It is important to connect classrooms to the real world. Incorporating real world connections into a lesson helps students understand the purpose for what they are learning and how the concepts they learn are useful beyond school.
