Description
In this 3-6 day 6th Grade Project on Rational Numbers, students will take the role of a travel agent, researching and calculating the costs of various methods of travel for their client’s desired destinations.
Standards: CCSS (6.NS.2, 6.NS.3, 6.RP.3) and TEKS (6.4B, 6.5A)
Students will take on the role of a travel agent that helps clients determine if it is cheaper to drive or fly to a destination. Using operations with rational numbers to determine the cost of various road trips, students will make comparisons between the cost of a road trip and the cost of flying to a destination. Students will determine the cost of each travel method and create a travel portfolio for the client.
This rational numbers real-world project is intended to provide engaging opportunities for extension and application of skills. It can serve as an assessment of students’ understanding while encouraging inquiry and critical thinking among students. This project is flexible in nature and includes teaching slides, warm-ups, exit tickets, student recording sheets and a project overview to help you structure class time and implement project components as smoothly as possible.
